“How to perfume yourself? Is it useful to perfume your clothes? Are there any tricks to make my perfume last all day?”

Lost? Don’t worry! Perfume is a daily gesture that we do not always master. The Essential Parfums team is here to help you.

So, here are 5 tips that will help you to better perfume yourself and to know the essentials on the art of perfume:

  • What are the areas to be perfumed?

It’s often said that you should spray your perfume on the hot spots where you feel your heart beating. Why? Because that’s where the body radiates the most heat, so the scent is best diffused

“Perfume yourself where you want to be kissed,” said Gabrielle Chanel.

Our advice: target the inside of the wrist, the ears, the back of the neck and the chest. A spray on the back of the joints is also very effective. The result: as you move, your body heat causes the fragrance to rise to your nose.

Spray the fragrance about 20 cm from your skin. The fragrance will last longer if it is sprayed evenly over a large area rather than liberally over a small area.

  • What about my clothes?

Scenting your clothes is a real olfactory debate. Some speak of waste, others of real pleasure. Should you scent your skin directly or spray it on your clothes?

Perfuming the skin brings more power and allows to appropriate the smell, and to make “his” with the perfume. However, perfuming your clothes allows you to keep the scent longer. The debate is open, but a question remains in our minds: Who does not like to spray a cloud of perfume on a scarf and enjoy it all day?

However, there are a few things to keep in mind. It is important to know that not all textile materials transmit odors in the same way. For example, synthetic fabrics do not diffuse scents well. It is better to spray your perfume on fabrics made of natural fibers (silk, wool, cashmere …)

  • How can I make my perfume last longer?

The secret to long-lasting fragrance is layering, or perfume layering. Create multiple layers of fragrance by using different forms of the same scent – a scented soap, bath oil or gel, body cream or lotion, face powder and eau de parfum. All the elements reinforce each other and quadruple the staying power of your favorite fragrance.

  • When should you use fragrance ?

Choosing the right perfume is also about choosing the right moment. A true gesture of hygiene, perfume should only be applied to clean skin. The ideal time to apply perfume is when you get out of the shower, when your skin’s pores are dilated by the heat.

Knowing how to choose the right moment also means taking into account your schedule, or even the season you are in. But we are not teaching you anything by saying that a summer perfume will be lighter than a winter perfume, generally more intense and warm. The weather and especially the temperature influence your skin and therefore the reaction that your perfume will have on your body.

  • What you shouldn’t do?

It is a common gesture, almost a reflex, that we do every day when we put perfume on our wrists: rub them together before putting some on our neck. However, this reflex is not recommended by perfumers. By rubbing our wrists we heat our skin. The perfume then undergoes a modification which influences its olfactory rendering. Remember: do not rub, spray directly on the skin.

The bathroom is not an ideal place … It is preferable to store your perfumes in a dry place at room temperature. The variations of temperatures of the bathrooms do not make them good, they deteriorate the color and the smell.

Finally, if you don’t smell your perfume after a while, it doesn’t mean that you need to re-scent it. This is normal! This is called olfactory adaptation. Our brain considers that the smell is not a danger and therefore does not pay attention to it anymore. The sense of smell is the most animal sense we have but we will talk about that another time…
