PATCHOULI: A PRECIOUS ESSENCE WITH UNSUSPECTED USES
If one note embodies autumn, it’s patchouli. Its dried Indonesian leaves are steam-distilled to give us rich, woody, earthy, smoky and camphor notes. It takes 50KG of dried leaves to produce 1KG of essence.
Used for centuries in Asia for its refined aromatic qualities, patchouli also served as a natural insect repellent. Its dried leaves were carefully tucked between precious fabrics to protect them from moths, particularly during transport by boat to Europe. On arrival in Europe, the fabrics were impregnated with the scent of patchouli.
In the 70s, patchouli became the olfactory emblem of the hippie movement. Imported from India by travelers fascinated by the Orient, patchouli, with its intense, earthy aroma, quickly established itself as a symbol of rebellion against established norms and a return to nature. It embodied the spirit of freedom and authenticity advocated by this generation.
